Hyndrix

Who are you?

I’m Hyndrix, 25, originally from Florida but Texas is home.

When did you start writing your rhymes

I was 13. I used to bring my little book to school. I would pass it around and ask for opinions, but I really just wanted to show off cause I knew I had it. That's when I really realized that there were people outside of me who fucked with my music.

Can you talk about your writing process?

I make sure that it's all carefully thought out, every word, every sentence. I'm not saying that everything is always going to be the deepest or it's always even gotta mean something. Sometimes I just say some shit just because it rhymes or because it sounds good. But even then it's supposed to create a feeling, it's supposed to evoke an emotion out of each person.  As artists, especially artists who have any kind of following, even one or two fans, that’s somebody who is looking up to you to guide them. So if you're not putting out anything that's helping them in any way, whether it's even just to make them feel better about themselves and feel better about their situation, then the shit really kind of pointless.

Who are some of your most direct influences?

A lot of old school music. I like the metaphors, the way they put their words together. I listen to the Dramatics, Boosie, Rick James, Earth, Wind, and Fire, Isaac Hayes. In the last 6 or 7 years,I have found a lot more solace in that old school shit, because it's not just like the feeling, but a real message they were putting out. The substance, the meaningfulness, the fact that everything seemed like it had a purpose.

What are some things you want to see brought to Dallas?

Identity, because it's been stolen way too much. You can see it everywhere you look. Dallas is everywhere in culture, but we don't get our credit too often. And it's cool because we know what it is. I want to see that identity, that structure, that foundation. Niggas have been building it for a long time. Some have tried ,some have failed, some keep going. It's a work in progress, and it's not going to be overnight.I want people to know Dallas is Dallas and that you can't just walk up and take what you want. It’s ours. This city, these venues, these restaurants; it’s ours, and niggas need to understand that a hundred percent.

At what point did you know you wanted to do music?

I always knew I wanted to do music. That's been top priority since I was a baby.  I just always naturally gravitated to the scene, to the whole life of it, to the whole culture of it. That's what I wanted to do. My mind, my heart, my eyes, it was always set on music. They were already set on connecting people. They were already lazer locked on. Getting to the position I am now and positioning me to a further spot too. I have just been focused on it since I was a baby, barely able to walk.
