Who are you?

It’s Lexaay! I am an artist from Dallas, Texas by way of Kansas city, by way of Philly, by way of Springfield, Missouri. Yeah. That's me.

What inspired you to get into music?

I come from a really musical family on both sides. My mom's side has lots of singers. One of the things we would do when we got together as a family is sing. Then my dad's side is more on the instrumental side. The first person that ever gave me a mic was my dad. They used to have a band called ABS back in the day and they would have kitchen band practice. I got my little mic stand as a child. My grandma used to teach me classics. That was where it started.

What do you want to gain out from this industry?

My biggest goal is to eventually be able to employ all of my talents and skills. I graduated from Temple University in December of 2019 with a double major in Dance Performance and Public Relations. So long-term the goal is to be able to make the music, produce the visuals, make dance films to go along with my music. Of course there would be different arrangements. So I would like to do that and eventually take those productions on the road and be able to employ concert dancers because it's hard out here for dancers. So I just want to be able to employ all my skills to get everybody paid.

“I was really shocked by all the love. I was just like, “We're gonna make this song, we're gonna shoot a video, we're going to drop it, and we're going to see what happens.” And I just got so much love…”

In what ways do you want your career to influence the Dallas creative scene?

I want to be remembered for being a person who was super supportive.  I'm the girl that comes to your shows and  cries on the last song because I’m so proud of everybody. I want to be the person that is remembered for always showing up for everybody when I can. I'm always showing love when I can and I keep it real. I'm myself all the time, and I want that to reflect in my music. I want it to reflect in how I communicate with people. That's it. I can't say, “I want to be the queen.” Nah I'm good. I just want to do what I love and enjoy my people in the process, and the Dallas art community have become my people.

When did you decide to get serious and like, ah, you know what, I'm actually gonna pursue this?

When it was my decision, like when I was a child, my parents really had me out there. I cut my first demo when I was seven. I still have all the CDs and stuff. So I kind of grew up with it not being my choice. That's why I got really heavy into dance. Since the pandemic started, I got tired of running from it. I'm gonna do it and do it on my terms and do it my way. I never stopped writing. I write music, but I also have a blog, that's at www.Lexaayyy.com. So I always exercise that muscle.I like to write short stories, and I never stopped writing music

What kind of growth have you seen in the fan base and the support that you've garnered?

Honestly, I was super shocked. Shout out to my brother Devy Stones, because Devy is part of the reason I even started. Devy and Xela, we've been doing a lot of subs. She's a producer and engineer out here. She goes crazy. Shout out to all the female engineers because there's not enough. Tommy actually produced my first single. My mom’s a huge supporter. I was really shocked by all the love. I was just like, “We're gonna make this song, we're gonna shoot a video, we're going to drop it, and we're going to see what happens.” And I just got so much love. Even when I dropped the cover. I was really shocked, and it's been like a steady climb, even dropping my second single. So I'm excited for the future and future releases to see how things continue to grow.
